GEOLOGY OF RED HILL

The red soil of Red Hill is the result of weathering of a rock called hornfels. Hornfels is a metamorphosed sedimentary rock. The molten volcanic rock intrusion which provided the heat to metamorphose the hornfels lies under the golf course. Good places to take a closer look at the hornfels are: between the summit restaurant and the golf course access road, and in the old quarry 50m south of the restaurant.
