Kangaroo Census

A census in August 2010 of the kangaroo population on Red Hill has recorded 447 within the 375ha reserve. Experts consider one kangaroo per hectare to be optimum. A second count taken on 7 August 2010 recorded 482, giving an average of 460.

The census was repeated in May 2011, when 636 were counted, being a 36% increase. A further 65 kangaroos were recorded as resident on the Federal Golf Course.

The 2012 kangaroo census was undertaken on 24 and 30 March 2012. On 24 March 745 kangaroos were recorded and a further 116 on the adjacent golf course. In addition to the kangaroos, We also counted 6 foxes, 6 hares, 3 swamp wallabies and 2 rabbits. On 30 March 769 kangaroos were counted on Red Hill and a further 137 on the golf course. The 2012 average indicated 757 kangaroos on Red Hill and 126 on the golf course. The kangaroo population is therefore growing strongly, having increased by 36% between 2010 and 2011 and a further 19% between 2011 and 2012.

Kangaroo movement around Red Hill

In 2010 a small numer of kangaroos were fitted with tracking collars which enabled their daily and long term movements to be recorded. The tracking records of two kangaroos - Rufus and Ruby, show their limited feeding range over a long period.
